Twitter

He rocks in the tree tops all day long
Hoppin' and a-boppin' and a-singing his song
All the little birds on Jaybird Street
Love to hear the robin go tweet tweet tweet...

Twitter.

What is it?
A social media portal that allows for users to submit posts, including links and photos, up to 140 characters.  Each user creates a username, aka "Twitter Handle," and can then add a default photo, bio, and follow people, as well as acquire followers.

Privacy setting?
Private- for select eyes only... OR Public- for anyone who wants to see! It's up to the user.

The hashtag (#)?
If you thought your idea was original, you may be surprised when #it and see how much it's trending in the twitterverse.

Who to follow?
Family? Friends? Coworkers? Students? Inspirational Quotes? Celebrities? Journalists? News Teams?

My opinion on this tech tool as a device in the classroom?
Not too fond of it.  I think this tool would turn out to be too much of a distraction.  It would end up being similar to the Wikipedia game where you start out on an information page about, say, biological evolution, and you click on a connected link, which leads you to another page, on which you click on another link, which leads you to another page, and so on and so forth, until you've wandered so far that you've landed on a page about the pink hippos in tutus of Fantasia. No, thank you.

However, it might be a valuable lesson in a computer education class for students to explore how to use Twitter in a responsible and safe way.  Lessons might include maneuvering Privacy Settings, following current events, and using caution in what you say, how you say it, and to whom you post it.
