In the first essay of this book, Raymond S. Nickerson of BNN Laboratories looks a possible futures of technology and its potential impact on our lives. The focus year is 2020, at which point researchers propose that our society will be highly dependent on machines. Nickerson outlines the characteristic of being educated that our future in technology has the potential to greatly impact, specifically acquiring domain-specific knowledge, developing students' ability to think, and fostering the ability and desire to learn (3-4). Nickerson goes on to comment on technology's growing potential to facilitate instruction and learning (7). He asks and leaves unanswered many questions about technology and how society will realize its potential. He leaves off by stating broadly, "The future, and in particular, the future of our education, will be what we make it" (Nickerson 9).
Thus, the future of technology and its potential to help or hurt education is our responsibility. The educators in the world must educate not only schools and society about the possibilities of various technologies, but also they must educate themselves so as not to get scooped up in the whirlwind of technological changes. I strongly recommend this book, as it is valuable to look at the current projections for our future classrooms. The book, which was written in 2013, might even have "mistakes" according to the directions technology and/or our education may have already taken!
